How to make pet adoption posts that actually work (and find a good home for a stray dog or cat)?

All these cuties were looking for a home in the CG Stray animal volunteers chat on Telegram
Below you will find our recommendations on how to compose and publish pet adoption posts on social networks if you intend to find a loving home for a stray cat or dog in Montenegro.

1. Photos are the key.
Good photos are 90% of success for a pet adoption post! You need to take clear photos with natural light, preferably with a beautiful background like the sea, flowers or green landscape. Play with a pet to catch funny moments when it's running or hunting. Photos really do matter a lot!

2. Keep it fresh.
It’s important to take new photos often to attract more attention to the posts, to get more likes and reposts. It will be great to take new photos or maybe videos every 2-3 days.

3. Posting strategy.
It’s better to publish posts on weekdays, not on weekends, and make new posts every 2-4 days with updated photos.

4. Tell the story.
Change the text of the post from time to time, and use the power of storytelling. For example, you can share how you got to meet the animal, its name, something about its character traits and what the pet is capable of and likes to do (what it likes to eat, how successfully it uses the litter box, whether a puppy brings toys etc). You can describe even the smallest achievements of the pet - all these small details attract attention.

5. Transportation options.
If you can transport the animal to any other city, you also should mention it in the post.

6. Where to post.
This is a list of chats and groups where you can publish posts to find home for a stray animal in Montenegro.
It’s very effective to publish posts on Facebook. You can translate posts to Russian and Montenegrin for groups in the list. Notice what photos are especially popular and getting more likes.
Also, you can write posts on local Montenegrin groups where people are sharing ads about selling or buying something. A search by word “OGLASI” on Facebook, for example, will show you a huge number of such groups, both general Montenegrin and locally by city. You can start with the largest ones and then focus on groups of Podgorica.

We don’t recommend to post in groups of the north of Montenegro, e.g., Berane, Niksic, Zabljak… People of this cities often tend to be different from residents of the capital city and the coast. There is a high probability that animal will quickly die, multiply uncontrollably and get sick on the streets. Good adopters can be everywhere, it just needs to be checked hard.

7. Questions for potential adopters.
When someone is interested in adoption, it’s important to ask them where, in what conditions and with whom the animal will live. Do they have any experience with pets before? Will they let the animal out into the streets alone? Are they ready to vaccinate, treat and spay the animal? It’s very important to spay pets in Montenegro because there are so many stray animals.
There is a list of questions for future pet owners.

8. Trust your gut.
If you don’t like a Facebook profile of potential adopters or a communication style, you can ask to meet them. It may be difficult to communicate online because of a poor knowledge of the language, e.g., so you can try to see the living conditions and the adopters in reality.
But remember, you can always refuse to give the animal to adopters if something bothered you about them.

So, it will be great if your post will contain:
• Cool photos.
• Age of the animal, even approximately.
• Description of character and information about health of the animal.
• A few words why you’re looking for adoption for the animal.
• Location and cities where you can bring the animal.
• Your contact information (phone number, messengers, Facebook).
